Paul Magnier gets his revenge

Sunday, August 16th, Hamburg - A new name has been added to the history books of the ADAC Cyclassics Hamburg: Paul Magnier (Soudal Quick-Step), the first French winner since Arnaud Démare 14 years ago (2012). As expected, the five ascents of the Waseberg, a climb of around 700 metres averaging close to 10%, with ramps reaching 16%, created the first selection in the peloton. Isaac Del Toro (UAE Emirates XRG) accelerated on the final ascent, around 15 kilometres from the finish, causing a major split and dropping two of the sprint favourites, Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek) and Olav Kooij (Decathlon CMA CGM). Magnier, however, managed to stay in the front group. After several further attacks in the final kilometres, the peloton came back together and the victory was decided in a sprint on Mönckebergstraße. The Frenchman finally won, beating Mike Teunissen (XDS Astana) and Laurence Pithie (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) to claim his revenge one year after finishing third in Hamburg.
